Home & Garden Safety

Home & Garden Safety :

Prevent Drowning

(1) Drowning can happen very fast. Most of the time you will not hear someone drowning.

(2) Drowning can happen in any standing water, such as a swimming pool, a pond or a ditch.

(3) A swimming pool should have a fence that goes all the way around it. The fence should have a gate that closes itself.

(4) When children are in the water stay close enough to touch them. Adults should keep their eyes on children every second that they are near or in water.

(5) Stay awake and alert when watching children in or near water, remember only adults can safely take care of children in or near water.

(6) Don’t ask children to baby-sit younger children and water.

Prevent Falls

(1) Put bright lights over all porches and walkways

(2) Have handrails on both sides of the stairs.

(3) Put ladders away after using them. Store ladders on their sides; in a shed or garage so children can’t climb on them.

(4) Keep stairs clear of things that you can trip over.

(5) Fix broken or chipped steps and walkways as soon as possible.

(6) If you have young children, use a safety gate to prevent falls from porches or decks.

(7) Cover the ground under playground equipment with a thick layer of mulch, wood chips or other safety material.

Prevent Poisoning

(1) Chemicals, fuels, car fluids, pesticides, and lawn and garden products are poison. Close the lid on all these products and put them away after using them.

(2) Store these products in a safe place with a lock.

(3) Store them where children cannot see or touch them.

Prevent Burn Injuries

(1) Use gasoline only as a fuel for motors.

(2) Store gasoline in a container designed just for gasoline in a shed or garage with a lock.

(3) Never bring gasoline indoors, even in small amounts. Use gasoline only outside, the vapors (fumes) are very dangerous if you bring gasoline inside a building.

(4) Fill mowers and gasoline-powered tools outside before starting the job. Re-fuel only after the tool has completely cooled down.

Keep Children Safe

(1) Keep children indoors while mowing or using other dangerous outdoor tools.

(2) Keep children far away from barbecue grills when cooking.

(3) All garden equipment and tools should be kept where children can’t reach them. Store all sharp tools pointing downward.
